History & Background

Mersad Berber was born in 1940, in Bosanski Petrovac, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Eldest child he began early in life showing a great talent for artistic endevors.His mother, Sadika, was a well-known tapestry weaver. She reproduced in her tapestries many of Mersad Berber's celebrated motifs.
Mersad painted throughout the High school, and his first drawings and comic books are being published publications throughout the Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.
In 1965 Berber graduated from the Arts Academy in Ljubljana. This begins artist's multi-faceted public exposure, culminating soon in international acclaim.
In 1987 Berber was made associate professor at the Sarajevo Arts Academy.
Mersad Berber has earned the reputation of one of the most famous contemporary artists, whose work is in great demand. His paintings are part of numerous public and private collections worldwide. The Tate Gallery in London purchased in 1984 one of his paintings, placing him side by side with the most celebrated artists in their prestigious institution.
The artist's permanent source of inspiration have been the towns of Sarajevo and Dubrovnik, as well as the work of his favorite painters, Vlaho Bukovac, Grunewald, Rubens, Velasquez, Caravaggio, Gericault. Berber's many hommages express his appreciation of their work.
His craftsmanship as draftsman and illustrator is widely known from his book illustrations. Furthermore, he has designed stage sets for theatre performances in Washington, Sarajevo and Zagreb. Berber is also the author of the animated film, ''Tempo secondo'' produced by Zagreb Film.
From 1966 to the present, Berber has won over fifty awards for his art.
International acclaim of his art has been proven by the awards received in Sao Paolo, Alessandria, Florence, Tokyo, New Delhi (Grand Prize of the Lalit Kala Academy, 1978, First Prize at World Book Fair, 1980), Monte Carlo (ICOM prize, 1978), Madrid, Leipzig, Varna, and Krakow (Triennial, 1997).
Comprehensive monographs of the artist's life and work were published in 1980 and 1985 by Mladinska knjiga (publisher house), Ljubljana, and in 1997 by Sol Intercontinental, Ljubljana.
From 1992 the artist has been resident of Zagreb.
